HOME is a mobile application designed for Canadian parolees to support reintegration and reduce recidivism by addressing key areas such as housing, education, employment, healthcare, and community engagement. The app was first launched as a pilot in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and later expanded across multiple regions in Canada, becoming one of the core social platforms used to support people returning to society after incarceration.
Background
For more than 25 years in the Canadian market, we have had a strong commitment to non-profit projects, so when Iridian Grenada (Senior Project Manager at John Howard Society HOME app) reached out with his idea, we moved from the initial discussion to working together within days.
After aligning on the product vision, we outlined the key challenges that needed to be addressed:
- Intuitive and easy-to-understand user experience, as people leave prison at different ages and with varying levels of digital familiarity
- Developing and integrating features that support people from the very first days after release, including job search, education, access to community events, etc
- Ensuring the app works well in real-life conditions, including limited internet access and older devices
Solution
Within a few months, the HOME app was ready to launch and had the next set of custom modules:
- Conflict resolver module: The app integrates with a trained ChatGPT that acts as an advisor, helping users navigate everyday situations, including emotional and psychological challenges.
- Job search module: Administrators can create and manage job listings, which are available directly in the app, allowing users to browse and respond without leaving the platform.
- Events module: A built-in section that lists events organized for parolees or relevant to their reintegration.
- Educate Module: Provides access to curated articles and materials. Content is managed through the admin panel, with the option to use selected materials to support ChatGPT responses.
- Emergency Contacts: Users can add up to 17 priority contacts (e.g., a parole officer or support person). They can call contacts directly or use the “Call for Support” button. Through round-robin functionality, the app selects a contact based on the chosen priority for an immediate call.
Technologies
Results
The HOME mobile application was successfully launched and made available to parolees, providing a structured way to access resources and stay connected with support services from the first days after release.
We were glad to contribute to this project and support communities across British Columbia and Canada through this initiative. Everyone can make mistakes or find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. What matters is how the community responds by stepping in and offering support when it’s needed.
